The competing demands you may feel as a Care Partner can impact your own health and well-being, as well as the success of treatment for the person you are caring for. How you balance the important tasks of care partnering with the central need to care for yourself also may affect your relationship with your family member or friend with CKD. Caring for yourself is crucial.
Proper self-care includes getting adequate rest, regular exercise, and taking care of your own health needs by keeping your regular medical appointments and addressing any new health concerns.
Take regularly scheduled breaks on a daily, weekly, monthly or annual basis. Reach out for support from care-partnering groups, family, and friends. Treatment centers and special respite care programs are designed to provide a break for care partners. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask for and receive help from others.
