This section takes a closer look at the kidneys and how they function.  Your kidneys are every bit as important as your heart and lungs, and are essential to how you feel and your quality of life. You’ll find information to help you understand how lifestyle changes and treatment choices will support your kidneys, now that you are in the later stages of CKD and approaching transplant or dialysis.

The kidneys are the key to your body’s filtration system, cleaning wastes from your blood and removing extra fluid. In addition to removing waste, your kidneys also balance the levels of important minerals your body needs to function. Last, the kidneys produce hormones and enzymes, chemicals that act as the body’s messengers, to help control blood pressure, aid in red blood cell production, and maintain bone strength.
