Understanding how insurance relates to kidney disease and its various treatments can be complicated.  With CKD your health care needs will likely change over time, so your insurance needs may also change.

Start by knowing who the policyholder is, and the type of insurance you have. Understand where the coverage comes from.  Is the coverage through active employment, retirement policy, COBRA or government insurance such as Medicare or Medicaid?

Be clear on your total health care needs -- Do you have other health conditions in addition to CKD?  Understand all your financial responsibilities related to your health insurance coverage.

Contact the human resources department at your job to learn more about your insurance policy, using these questions as a guide.  Another great source of information about insurance is your social worker. Taking care of all of these matters are the best steps you can take to make a good, and lasting plan.
