Make a Plan - Hemodialysis: What is Hemodialysis?

Hemodialysis: a treatment that filters your blood and removes fluid with an artificial filter, the dialyzer.

  • A dialysis machine cycles blood between your body and the dialyzer.
  • Blood travels in and out of the body through tubes that have needles attached to them which are inserted into your access.
  • In-center hemodialysis treatment happens several times a week, in 3-to-4 hour sessions during the day, or 6-8 hour sessions at night.
  • Home hemodialysis treatment happens 5-to-6 times a week, in 2.5-to-3 hour sessions during the day.
