Make a Plan - Hemodialysis: Hemodialysis Access

Your access is your lifeline!

Access to your blood is created and flows in and out of the dialyzer through one of three vascular access options:

  • Arteriovenous (AV) Fistula: an under-the-skin surgical connection directly linking an artery and a vein in your arm
  • Arteriovenous (AV) Graft: an under-the-skin surgical connection using man-made tubing to link an artery to a vein in your arm
  • Central Venous Catheter or Internal Port Devices: a temporary access device placed into a vein in the neck, chest or groin while a fistula or graft are developing
